North Kellyville - Sandstone Logs Wall

This North Kellyville landscaping project was centred around the strength, texture and timeless appeal of Sandstone Logs, carefully selected to complement the natural bushland setting surrounding the home. The brief was clear –  use raw, natural materials to create structure, definition and long-term durability while enhancing the property’s connection to its environment.

With the block sloping significantly, structural integrity was critical. Our team installed over 200 sandstone logs, each weighing approximately 600kg, securely positioned on engineered, steel-reinforced concrete footings. These substantial sandstone retaining elements allowed us to transform the gradient into three distinct, usable outdoor zones. The result is a seamless blend of function and natural beauty, with the sandstone logs forming strong yet organic retaining walls that sit comfortably within the landscape.

Sandstone Logs Creating Defined Outdoor Spaces

The installation of sandstone logs was essential in reshaping the land and maximising the usability of the property. By tiering the slope, we created level platforms that now serve as practical outdoor areas while maintaining the site’s natural character. The scale and weight of each sandstone log required precise excavation and expert construction techniques to ensure long-term stability.

The natural tones and textures of the sandstone blocks tie effortlessly into the bush backdrop, giving the entire project a grounded and cohesive feel. These large-format sandstone retaining walls not only provide structural support but also act as a striking visual feature from both the street and garden level.

Sandstone Piers and Feature Elements

The hero feature of this project is the impressive sandstone pier fence. Constructed using approximately 250 individually rock-faced sandstone blocks, each weighing around 60kg, the fence incorporates 21 sandstone piers in total. Every block was carefully laid to create a premium, handcrafted finish that enhances the property’s street appeal.

Between the sandstone piers, custom corrugated infill panels were installed with integrated soundproofing for added privacy and noise reduction. Hardwood timber stakes were incorporated into the front piers, adding warmth and texture while maintaining the natural design theme.

On the lower level, we hand-built a recycled brick fire pit area, framed by sandstone stepping stones and enclosed with a hardwood timber fence. This inviting space blends effortlessly into the bush surrounds, providing a functional yet beautifully integrated entertaining zone.

Designed by a landscape architect, council-approved and fully engineered, this North Kellyville sandstone project showcases the enduring appeal and structural strength of sandstone logs, sandstone blocks and sandstone piers in premium residential landscaping.

What are sandstone logs used for in landscaping?

Sandstone logs are large, solid sandstone retaining elements commonly used to build structural retaining walls on sloping blocks. Because of their size and weight, often 500 – 700kg each –  they are ideal for creating stable, long-lasting tiered landscapes. Sandstone logs are popular in bushland and high-end residential projects due to their natural texture, durability, and ability to blend seamlessly with Australian outdoor environments.

Are sandstone logs suitable for retaining walls?

Yes, sandstone logs are extremely well-suited for retaining walls. When installed on engineered, steel-reinforced concrete footings, they provide exceptional structural strength and longevity. They are particularly effective on sloping sites where multiple levels need to be created safely and attractively.

How long do sandstone retaining walls last?

Properly installed sandstone retaining walls can last several decades. When built on engineered footings with adequate drainage, sandstone logs and sandstone blocks offer outstanding durability and weather resistance, making them a premium long-term landscaping solution.

What is a sandstone pier fence?

A sandstone pier fence consists of vertical sandstone piers constructed from individually laid sandstone blocks. These piers are typically paired with timber, steel, or custom infill panels. Sandstone piers create a high-end, architectural street presence while providing privacy, durability, and structural strength.

Are sandstone blocks better than concrete blocks for fencing?

Sandstone blocks provide a more natural, premium aesthetic compared to concrete blocks. While concrete can be cost-effective, sandstone offers timeless appeal, superior visual texture, and increased property value due to its natural stone finish.

Do sandstone logs require council approval?

In most cases, sandstone retaining walls over a certain height require council approval and engineering certification. It is important that sandstone log walls are professionally designed and constructed.
